AURICULAR
THERAPY
is
the use of needles or seeds on the ear. The ear represents a microcosm
of the whole body. The ear itself can be used as a single aspect
of treating the problems of the body. There are different types
of protocols that can be used for weight loss, addictions, pain
management, mental issues such as depression and anxiety, chronic
fatigue, skin conditions, high blood pressure and many more.
CUPPING
is
a therapy designed to stimulate the flow of blood and Qi within
the superficial muscle layers. It is used for sore muscles, tension,
neck pain and the common cold. In this therapy, your acupuncturist
will place small glass cup over specific areas on your body. A vacuum
is created under the cup using heat. They may be moved over an affected
are or left in place. You may leave the office looking as though
a large octopus gave you a big hug. There is no need for alarm.
The slight redness will quickly dissipate.
GUA
SHA
Gua
sha is another technique used to release muscle tension, tightness
and constriction. A specialized tool is used to gently scrape or
rub the skin over a problem area. Gua sha feels a bit like a deep
massage. This too may leave some slight redness that will quickly
dissipate.
MOXIBUSTION
is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning
of the herb Ai Ye (mugwort), a small, spongy herb, to facilitate
healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands
of years. The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional
Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow
of qi, and maintain general health.
In indirect moxibustion, a practitioner lights one end of a moxa
stick, roughly the shape and size of a cigar made with Ai Ye, and
holds it close to the area being treated for several minutes until
the area turns red. Another form of indirect moxibustion uses both
acupuncture needles and moxa. A needle is inserted into an acupoint
and retained. The tip of the needle is then wrapped in Ai Ye and
ignited, generating heat to the point and the surrounding area.
After the desired effect is achieved, the Ai Ye is extinguished
and the needle(s) removed.
TUINA
MASSAGE
To a Westerner,
Tui Na is the form of Asian bodywork most closely resembling conventional
western massage. Many of the techniques are similar -- gliding (known
as effleurage or Tui), kneading (petrissage or Nie), percussion
(tapotement or Da), friction, pulling, rotation, rocking, vibration,
and shaking. Despite the similarities, the intent of Tui Na is more
specifically therapeutic than the simple relaxation of a Swedish-style
massage.
One
of Tui Na's advantages over simple massage is its ability to focus
on specific problems, especially chronic pain associated with the
muscles, joints, and skeletal system. It's especially effective
for joint pain (such as arthritis), sciatica, muscle spasms, and
pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. It also helps chronic conditions
such as insomnia, constipation, headaches (including migraines),
and the tension associated with stress.
